Mission Impossible Update #1

So as a recap: I get made fun of for not knowing the words to any Bellwether song. I’m determined to learn at least one by December 9th.

I saw the band last night, and I actually know more than a few words! I know a few whole lines! And even a chorus or two!!!

Also, the greatest part of all, I now know their songs well enough to say that In Memoriam is my favorite.

It’s pathetic how excited I am right now, but I’m making progress! Yay progress!

“This band is a video game… Fight!”

Kyle just said this in reference to how Bellwether has been taking out the “opposition,” with all due disrespect.

4 down, plenty more to go.

“So, what do you think of Bellwether?”

» I hate this question. People ask this all the time, and I never know how to answer it. I’ve tried to give a proper answer a few times but based on the reactions my responses get, I don’t think I’m doing a good job. So let’s clear this up, shall we?

» November 1st, 2010 - A new band consisting of people I knew from other bands put out a song that pissed off half of the Long Island music scene. This band, Bellwether, wrote a song that successfully tore apart the “musicians” that were making music for all the wrong reasons.  In doing this, they never outright named specific bands, but their references were pretty obvious… plus when people who weren’t referenced got offended, it became obvious that this wasn’t the first time they received negative comments. They ripped apart the bands that focus more on their hairstyles and “making it big” rather than doing it for the fun of it, to connect with people, or for any genuine reason at all.  In doing this, they never made themselves sound better than these “bands.” If you really look at the lyrics, Bellwether just took these poor examples of musicians as a reason to try that much harder, to be unique and actually give a damn about the music they put out. So from that alone, I became a fan of Bellwether.

» After downloading the song, I didn’t listen to it that much after it had been out for a month or so.  They started playing shows, and I either couldn’t make it or didn’t think about it. I was still a senior in high school then so I still had some limitations on that front and I really had to pick my battles with stuff like that.  But they played some shows, and I promoted them for a few reasons.  I’ve known Desmond since the days of Holden Pan / As A Gift, and I’d talked to Bilder a few times at shows. They’re good guys, and they had something to say with their music. Why wouldn’t I help?

» Fast Forward: On July 24th, 2011, Bellwether played a show with Hit The Lights at Ollie’s Point. Naturally I was in attendance, being a huge fan of HTL and With The Punches who also played. This was my first time seeing Bellwether live. Only having the memory of a poor As A Gift performance to go on, my expectations for this show really weren’t high. I had forgotten how much of a ruckus “With All Due Disrespect” had caused, and I forgot how dedicated kids in the Long Island music scene can be.  Desmond introduced the band, and the most amazing intensity broke out in the crowd instantaneously. It only took one note to make those kids go absolutely crazy. So from that alone, I would never have a problem with seeing Bellwether live. In fact, I would enjoy it every time.

» A lot happened at that show actually. Bilder and I became actual friends after realizing we have the same birthday, I had a wonderful conversation with Desmond who was the absolute happiest I have ever seen him, and the most important part: that was the day that I started talking to Kyle.

» 5 days later, I saw the band again when they played with We Are The Union and The Story So Far. Their set had just as much energy and passion, but it was still so different from their set the weekend before. Kids were still causing a ruckus in the crowd, of course, and their enthusiasm is usually what catches my attention first. So first I noticed the crowd’s reaction. And then I noticed how cute their guitarist looked on stage…

» September 2nd, 2011 - Bellwether guitarist Kyle Gorry & I become a couple.

» September 3rd, 2011 - People start asking me about my opinion of his band.

» If you’ve actually read this far, I thank you. There is a point I promise. See, I really never know what to say when people ask me this question. I do really like the band. Their music has an attitude and I know the guys will never hesitate to speak their mind which just adds to the overall punk feel. Their stage presence is great, and the crowd seems to love it every time. I’ve seen them play for a large audience with tons of friends and fans, and then I’ve seen them play for smaller crowds with several new faces, and I have yet to see a crowd that didn’t respond positively to their set. I promote this band because I have faith in them and what they stand for.

» Seems easy enough to say that, right? I hope that now I’ve explained all this background nonsense that maybe it’ll be easier to accept that I actually just like this band. It has nothing to do with the fact that I’m head over heels for their guitarist. That’s why I’m so hesitant to answer this question. I don’t promote them just to promote my boyfriend, although that is an added bonus. I aim to promote bands that deserve attention and recognition for all the effort they put into making music people can enjoy. As a writer I don’t want to have to worry about conflicts of interest ruining anyone’s credibility. So that’s why I haven’t been overly enthusiastic when answering this question.

» So here’s the moral of the story: I really like Bellwether. I have faith in them, and I enjoy going to their shows. Being able to listen to their songs and going to their shows while also supporting the boy I’m crazy about is simply a bonus.

» I really hope that this cleared things up, especially if anyone bothered reading this whole thing. I feel better now, and that was really the point.

I’ve been getting made fun of because I don’t know any Bellwether songs…

So I’m gonna try and learn the words to (and maybe even the name of) at least one of the songs before the next show. AT LEAST ONE.  Then everyone can stop making fun of me for not knowing my boyfriend’s songs. It shouldn’t be too hard… right?

Some people really try to believe but you taught me some people just quote lyrics to make themselves think that they’re emotionally deep.
